Yesterday morning, as I was getting ready to leave for Pittsburgh’s Pridefest where we have marched and had a booth every year, I got word from Victor about the tragedy in Orlando. Earlier as I was skimming the news headlines, I had seen a headline about a shooting in Orlando, but had no indication of the magnitude of the carnage.
My first thought was that it was some wacko christian fundagelical wanting to kill some evil gays for jesus. As it turns out, it was some wacko muslim jihadi wanting to kill some evil gays for allah. So now all the news media and law enforcement agencies are spinning it as a homegrown jihadist terrorist attack. While there is an element of truth in that slant, that is only a small part of the picture.
It doesn’t matter if the delusional that perpetrated this killing is christian or muslim – delusionals are delusionals. The real story is the disgusting negative impact that the abrahamic religions have had on the world and the repressive sexual dysfunction that they have foisted on our entire cultures, both western and middle eastern. And all of it stems from a Bronze Age book codifying a tribal system wherein a male patriarchy was perpetuated while dictating the need to increase the population of their tribe (and by extension the world) in an unrestrained manner.
Maybe, in such a primitive culture this sort of thinking made sense – although I would submit that from a woman’s perspective it probably sucked being chattel property. But in today’s modern world, with the knowledge we have of how the world works and the vast compendium of philosophical writings available to us, there is no reason to give credence or even respect to any of this nonsense. It is garbage that needs relegated to the dustbin of history.
A short time ago, I received a text from the Pridefest organizer, The Delta Foundation (my cell is the contact number for CFI-Pgh as an annual participant for Pridefest), announcing a Candlelight Vigil for the 49 victims of the tragedy (and the 53 wounded). As I prepared to send out an e-mail announcing the vigil to our members by quoting the text verbatim, I saw at the end that they are calling it a prayer vigil and saw the hashtag “Pray for the victims#”. So here they are – promoting the very institutions/thinking processes that have created the very situation where these kinds of tragedies occur.
No thank you – I will remember and honor these victims in my own way – not in a way that promotes the superstition and ignorance that encourages these things.
Remember the Orlando 49 – may their sacrifice serve a greater good!!!!!
