How We Got to Now: Six Innovations That Made the Modern World. Steven Johnson.
Johnson explains the history of innovation over the centuries tracing facets of modern life (refrigeration, clocks, eyeglass lenses) from their creation by hobbyists, amateurs, and entrepreneurs. The book is filled with accidental genius and brilliant mistakes. A number of inventions, not intentionally, had their effect in completely different fields. The writing is quick and entertaining. The Carnegie Library has 26 copies of the book and 5 copies of the PBS DVD series on the book. The PBS series also streams on Netflix.
Johnson is the author of The Ghost Map …, which this group read several years ago. That was a good one!
