Welcome to CFI’s monthly lecture night series!
Caution: Censorship Maybe Harmful to Your Freedom, Health, Economic Security, Etc. This facilitated discussion will explore the topic of censorship and free expression. While the discussion will evolve based on participants interests, areas that may be addressed include: Shifting Interpretation
of the First Amendment throughout US History; Free Speech, Safety and National Security; Hate Speech; Soft Censorship v Hard Censorship; Censorship in Health Care; Censorship in Academia; and Censorship
in the Computer Age. Landmark Supreme Court Cases and sections of the United Nations Universal Declaration on Human Rights will be used as examples to clarify the evolution of Free Expression.
About the Facilitator…
Brenda Lee Green has been involved with the ACLU of PA for more than two decades in various capacities including member, donor, volunteer and board member. Most of her work with the ACLU involves protection of the First Amendment. She was instrumental in the establishment of the Pittsburgh Chapter’s Annual Banned Books Celebration a public education event now in its 20th year. In 1997, Brenda served on a national curricula review committee evaluating federally funding Abstinence Only until Marriage education programs. In 2007, she participated in a national roundtable discussion
funded by the Ford Foundation looking at low income women and equal access to health care information. She is a voracious reader and First Amendment advocate.
