CFI Monthly Lecture and Movie Night!: 7PM TODAY at First Unitarian Church

Where: First Unitarian Church (605 Morewood Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15213)

RSVP at:

Pittsburgh Secular Freethinkers (CFI)

Jesse Dunietz is a Ph.D. student in computer science at Carnegie Mellon University. Originally from New Jersey, Jesse’s circuitous route to Pittsburgh has included residences in Israel, Cambridge (the Massachusetts one), Cambridge (the English one), and California (the only one). He is currently working on teaching computers to identify and interpret language about cause and effect. He is also a founder and the current president of Carnegie Mellon’s Public Communication for Researchers program, which helps graduate students learn and practice communicating about science with people of all backgrounds. He is easily distracted by birds.

Jesse will lead an audience-driven discussion about artificial intelligence, focusing mainly on systems that handle human language. First, he’ll briefly raise a number of counter-intuitive observations about the field of AI: the sometimes tense relationship between linguistics and computer science; how Siri, Google Translate, and other language-processing systems actually work; why those systems are dumber than they look; and how close we really are to different kinds of artificial intelligence. Then, guided by participants’ interests and questions, we’ll delve deeper into some of those topics in a discussion-based format.

See you there!

P.S.  We usually head to Ali Baba’s on nearby Craig Street at 5:30 p.m. for a pre-lecture or pre-movie dinner. As is often the case, our speaker will be joining us. Please leave a comment below if you are coming to dinner so we can include you in the reservation. Thanks!
