You are invited to attend the second annual Storytelling and Human Rights Symposium. Free speech and censorship will the focus of this year’s symposium. The event will begin with an introductory address followed by smaller workshop sessions.

Henry Reese, co-founder and chairman of City of Asylum, Pittsburgh, is the event’s keynote speaker. He and discussion panelists and workshop leaders will lead participants through major free speech issues from different perspectives, including literature and the humanities, legal issues and human rights, journalism and propaganda, and theatre and the arts.

City of Asylum Pittsburgh provides sanctuary to endangered literary writers so that they can continue to write and their voices are not silenced. They offer a broad range of literary programs in a variety of community settings to encourage cross-cultural exchange, and they publish the online magazine,, which seeks to provide a safe “virtual” space for endangered writers and writing.

The symposium will be interactive. Both the keynote speaker and a discussion panel will discuss the importance of free speech in literature, journalism, and the arts to democracy and human rights. Afterward, the audience will break into small workshops with the panelists where they will create their own skit, story or piece of art with the panelists. Workshops for this year’s symposium will be led by representatives from the ACLU and Big Idea Books and Point Park’s own professors and students. Representatives with information from Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, SLB Radio, and other local nonprofits and organizations will also be available.

The university’s Honors Student Organization is partnering with Global Solutions for the event. Students from local universities, regional high schools, and the general public are invited to attend. Please share this event with your networks, colleagues, and friends. Admission is free but registration is required. The registration form can be accessed through this link here:
