I generally regard myself as a person forever evolving in my knowledge and understanding of how the mind of a religious extremist works. One of the most helpful exercises in this respect is the ability for me to experience it – live – right in front my very eyes. In my opinion, the actual experience is worth a hundred books on the subject that one could buy at Barnes and Noble.
Extraordinary opportunities to do this, however, come along with such infrequency that, when I find them, I want to share them with everyone. Such was the case when I discovered one such opportunity over at John Amato’s site, Crooks and Liars.
CNN’s Anderson Cooper recently interviewed Al Melvin, an Arizona State Senator who wants to be the State’s next Governor. Melvin voted in favor of the Arizona bill that would allow anyone with a “sincerely held religious belief” to deny products or services to anyone who felt that doing so would “offend their religious convictions.” He wants Jan Brewer to sign that sucker right now. The 12-minute interview was one of the most enlightening that I’ve seen in a very long time.
I highly recommend watching the interview. Everything you ever wanted to know about the mindset of a religiously-driven pol will be exposed in this short 12-minutes interview.
Get a cool one and buckle-up. You’re in for a real treat.
PS. Spoiler alert: Melvin makes Brewer look like a genius.
Fairly certain who it is you speak of. Initials DM?
Loved AC’s example of divorce/unwed mothers and the pol’s flaccid attempt at skirting the issue.
Made me think of the ONLY two ways to follow any holy text-by the letter or as though you were at Burger King, where you can have it your way.
BTW, Brewer will not sign the bill.
I didn’t really have to watch it. The PA State Representative for my district is a theocrat and Torturer in Chief for the legislature, so I am all too familiar with this disgusting mindset.
