I sure hope all of you can make it out to Drinking Skeptically this Friday, August 22 at 7:30pm at The Library on the South Side (we’ll be upstairs!). June and July’s gatherings were so much fun (be sure to check out the pictures in the gallery here) and August is shaping up to be just as great, if not better. Word has really spread quickly and this month I was contacted by local illusionist and magician Rick Maue. He will be attending Drinking Skeptically on Friday. If you haven’t heard of Maue you should definitely check out his website Deceptions Unlimited. Here you can read a short bio on his work and how it relates to the skeptical community:
Rick Maue has been creating theatrical deception for more than four decades, and his specialty is getting inside the heads of his audience. His demonstrations range from controlling the decisions of others to reading their thoughts—but not really. After all, everything that Rick does is nothing more than theater, but sometimes he has a difficult time convincing everyone that sees him that he is simply creating illusions for the mind.
Just ask yourself, if Rick’s performances look so real, and yet he openly states that they are nothing more than theatrical deception, then why would anyone bother to believe the so-called “psychics” that infect the public airwaves on a regular basis? After all, Rick can read minds…communicate with those that have “crossed over”…predict the future…and much more—but not really.
Rick became a dedicated skeptic during his high school days back in the 70’s. Since then, he has been creating his own form of theatrical lies in order to show how easy it is to create the illusion of paranormal activity. Over the past few decades, he has performed for Fortune 500 companies, major universities, and scientific organizations from coast-to-coast—including a run of theatrical séances for The Amazing Meeting back in 2005.
Rick spends most of his time at his home in Pittsburgh, with his wife Tammy and their daughter Jamie, where they run Deceptions Unlimited. One of his goals has always been to remain a bit of an enigma, but that seems to be getting harder with each passing year.
I’m so excited to meet Rick and talk to him about his experiences. We also will have a couple of out-of-towners attending, a good friend of mine that I met at TAM 5.5 is visiting from Boston and perhaps one of the Skepchicks will be in from Ohio (I hope you can make it Jen!). I am also excited to see everyone again and perhaps try more of that oatmeal beer I had last month. Of course, teetotalers are always welcome to join in the fun – and try some of the delicious food they have at The Library. If at all possible, please remember to bring cash so we can combine our tabs and make it easier on their staff – they’ve been really accommodating this summer.
Hope to see you Friday!
PS: Remember – Drinking Skeptically will be UPSTAIRS!
