Drinking Skeptically – Anniversary Edition!

Join us in celebrating our anniversary this Friday!

It’s our anniversary! Not just of Drinking Skeptically, but also of Steel City Skeptics! Come out and party with us at The Bar (2132 E. Carson) this Friday at 7:30pm!

We’re going to try something wild and crazy this time. We’re not moving tables. When a table fills up, people will just have to split up and seed a new table with the newest arrivals. This is a pub night, not a formal dinner, right? The long meeting-hall style dining is not welcoming to new folks and it’s less than fun for anyone stuck in a place that requires seven or eight people moving just to get another drink.

It all started a year ago with a bunch of strangers saying “hello!” and introducing themselves. Don’t be shy! Remember, we’re all geeks here!

Oh look – Forums!

You might’ve noticed the menu at the top of the page growing over the last week. I added an archive for tags that displays them in cloud form. (The larger the font, the more we’re written about that topic. I’m interested to see how this cloud will grow.) And today I finally added the forums. Give ‘em a try?

One thing I like about them is that they have rss feeds, so you can track discussions in your feed reader of choice.I thought forums might be handy for people who want to share something but don’t feel it needs a post of it’s own. I don’t always have time to write a detailed post, but I find things I want to pass along all the time.

Things I hope to see there:

an awesome joke thread
new suggestions for bars for Drinking Skeptically
links to your blogs and all manner of social networking link exchanges
book exchanges!
topic requests
exciting new SCS meme developments (the evolution of in-jokes!)
event carpooling hookups!

Did I mention our group on Atheist Nexus? If not, I should have. It brought some new faces to July’s Drinking Skeptically, and I personally cannot see a better reason to join as many social networking sites as possible than meeting new pub mates!

Laura liked my black n’ gold SCS logo, so I thought I’d post it. Feel free to use it for linking. I’m thinking of getting my hands on a button machine and it could end up on a backpack or jacket near you. All the cool kids have been doing it forever so I wonder how cool it still could be, but I will not argue with the promotional info packet provided on the button-o-matic box. It’s called choosing your battles, my friends, and it’s not like marketing materials would steer me wrong, right? ;)

The fellas from CFI have sent in some photos from the canoe trip this past Sunday, so look for them in the Photo Gallery shortly! (And be envious with me of their sun-filled fun. Sharing is a virtue, I hear!)

Another great turnout for Drinking Skeptically!

BillK and I estimate last night’s Drinking Skeptically turnout was in the upper twenties. We had folks who came from CFI Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Secular Freethinkers, SCS on Atheist Nexus, the Facebook groups and via an awesome plug from Skepchick.org! (How cool is that?!) Photos will be added soon.

We had a lot of new faces and hope to see everyone again in August. (And well, at the other various events that are happening before then, of course.) In the meantime, Steven has started a list of skeptical podcasts you can drink to over at our Facebook group. Add your favorites!
