The History of God, Part 2

Dave Noon did some more digging on party platforms and found that the Republicans were not always so god-obsessed.  Actually, they were never so god-obsessed as they were this year.  Here are the number of God references in the party platforms going back to 1856:

God was basically absent until around 1956, but even then was just given a cursory nod.  It was the 1980 evangelical movement that brought more mention. This year it skyrocketed to 10 (and not 12 has Fox News mistakenly reported).

Dave Noon also compared the Democrats and Republicans for the past few decades and found remarkably similar patterns:

So when will the party platforms return to the golden age of the past century?  As Annie Laurie Gaylor articulately said:

… I’m hopeful someday soon that gratuitous political piety will once again be seen as tasteless pandering, and that public dissing of freethinkers and atheists will be seen as just plain bad manners. And then the intent of our founders will be honored — that there shall be no religious test for public office, or good citizenship.
